The Things My Kids Will Remember That I Almost Never Think About

Sometimes I worry that I’m not doing enough.

Not enough traditions.

Not enough activities.

Not enough adventures.

Not enough crafts.

Not enough memorable childhood experiences.

Then I remember what I actually remember from being a kid.

And most of it wasn’t the big stuff.

It was ordinary.

The Little Routines

The bedtime routines.

The snacks after school.

The same books read over and over.

The songs we played in the car.

The little things that happened so often that they didn’t seem special at the time.

Those are the things that become part of childhood.

The Way Home Felt

I want my kids to remember that home was a place they could come back to.

A place where they were welcome.

A place where they could be loud, silly, tired, hungry, or upset.

It doesn’t have to be perfect.

It just needs to feel like theirs.

The Random Conversations

Some of the best conversations happen when you’re doing something completely ordinary.

In the car.

While making dinner.

At bedtime.

Walking through a store.

The questions kids ask when you least expect them.

Those moments don’t make it onto a bucket list.

But they’re still memories.

The Tiny Traditions

Maybe it’s pancakes on Saturday.

A certain movie every Christmas.

Ice cream after a game.

A birthday breakfast.

A special bedtime routine.

Traditions don’t have to be elaborate.

They just have to happen often enough to become “our thing.”

Being There

I think this is the one I worry about most.

Whether I’m doing enough.

But maybe the most important thing isn’t how many experiences I create.

Maybe it’s whether I’m present for the ones that happen naturally.

My kids don’t need a childhood filled with perfectly planned moments.

They need a childhood filled with love.

And hopefully, years from now, they’ll remember a lot of little things I didn’t even realize mattered.
